Turkey hails Britain for adding HPG to terror list

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has commended Britain for adding People’s Defense Forces (HPG) and Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK) to its list of terrorist organizations, ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy announced on Saturday.

Britain on February 28 added to its terrorist organizations list TAK, considered to be an offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and HPG, the armed wing of the PKK.

The PKK, which has fought for Kurdish self-rule in Turkey since 1984, uses such labels to “avoid responsibility in heinous attacks targeting civilians and obscure its connections to various terrorist actions,” Aksoy was quoted by the state-run Anadolu Agency as saying.

Turkey considers it to be “a necessity of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism” for the EU and Turkey’s other allies to take the British regulation as precedent and update their own lists, Aksoy said.

The United States considers the TAK to be a branch of the PKK, while the EU lists it as a separate organization, Anadolu said.
