The Pentagon said the strikes targeted five weapons stores used by Iraqi paramilitary groups, including facilities housing arms used in past attacks on US-led coalition troops. But an Iraqi military statement said no paramilitary fighters had been killed, according to Reuters.
Three soldiers, two policemen, and one civilian were killed, it said. Four soldiers, two policemen, one civilian, and five militiamen were wounded, the military said.
The dead civilian was a construction worker who was killed in a strike on a civilian airport in the holy Shia Muslim city of Karbala, according to the management of the Imam Hussein shrine.
The airport’s construction is being funded by the shrine management.
“The Imam Hussein Holy Shrine condemns this unjustified and blatant assault,” it said.
Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said on Friday that US President Donald Trump should blame attacks against US and allied forces in Iraq on their “presence and behavior.”
“Instead of undertaking dangerous steps and resorting to baseless accusations, Trump should review the illegal presence and behavior of his troops in the region and avoid making accusations to divert attention from their responsibility,” said ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi, according to state TV.
