Syrian Kurdish leaders are concerned over possible US sanctions

<p style="text-align: left;">The executive head of the Syrian Democratic Council, the political branch of the Syrian Democratic Forces, says the U.S. has made no pledge to Kurds about excluding them from Washington sanctions against Damascus.

Washington plans to impose sanctions against Syria, but they could also affect the Kurdish self-ruling system in northern Syria, a United States ally, the National Interest magazine reported.

William Robak, the US special envoy to Syria, promised last month that the Kurdish system in northern Syria would be exempted from US sanctions against the Syrian government, according to the National Interest.

However, Ilham Ahmed, Chief Executive of the Syrian Democratic Council, attended a video conference in London and said the U.S. has not made any promises to Kurds to spare them from the impact of its sanctions on Damascus.

She stressed that there is nothing but a promise made by Robak that shows there is no impact on the northeast of Syria, and it is not clear whether the sanctions will affect Kurds.

Ilham Ahmed warned that sanctions will have a serious impact on the lives of Syrians more than the government.
