It was clear that Trump would prefer Turkey to Syrian Kurds: expert

<p style="text-align:left">Patrick Cookburn says it was clear that Trump, after five years of allying with the Syrian Kurds, would prefer the 80-million-Turkey to the Kurds.

A journalist and Middle East expert, Patrick Cookburn has published a book entitled "War under Trump" in which he has dedicated some parts to the Kurdish issues.

In his book on the events of October 2019 in northern Syria, he wrote: The Kurds lost 11,000 of their forces in the war against the IS, but Donald Trump betrayed the Kurds by giving the green light to Turkey to attack them.

However, he stressed on the need for realism in politics, saying, "One day the United States had to choose between the population of two million Syrian Kurds and the 80 million Turks in Turkey; So it was not very difficult to predict what he (Trump) would decide."

Patrick Cookburn pointed to the opposition of Western countries to holding the independence referendum in the Kurdistan Region in September 2017, calling it a pure mistake by the Kurds.

He emphasized that the referendum was an excuse for Baghdad to deal harshly with the Kurds and for the Kurdistan Region to lose much of its territory.
