Borrell is expected to meet with senior officials in Erbil, NRT reported.
Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Borrell arrived in Iraq on Monday. He will have meetings with Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, and Speaker of Parliament Mohammed Al Halbousi.
The discussions are expected to include recent political and security developments in the country and the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections set for October 10 which the EU will be monitoring.
Meanwhile a delegation from the Turkish main opposition CHP visited Erbil on Saturday, September 5, the capital of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The CHP officials met with top KRG officials, including President Nechirvan Barzani, to reinforce the idea of a Middle East Peace and Collaboration Organization that CHP chair Kemal Kilicdaroglu has been encouraging.
