Russia, SDF reach deal to prevent Turkish attacks on disputed Syrian town

<p dir="LTR" style="text-align: justify;">The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have reached a deal with Russia and the Syrian government to establish Russian military positions near the northern Syrian town of Ain Issa, which has been bombarded by Turkey-backed fighters since early December, Kurdistan 24 reported on Thursday.

The three parties have &ldquo;agreed to establish three points … to reduce the violations against our people in Ain Issa and Ain Issa countryside&rdquo;, Riyadh al-Khalaf, the military council leader for the Tal Abyad district, said in a public statement, according to Kurdistan 24. The posts will be tasked with observing Turkey&rsquo;s violations and bombardment in the area.

Ain Issa, located on the strategic M4 highway that connects northeast Syria, is held by the SDF, an alliance of militias and a major partner of the United States in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group.

The first post will be established in the eastern part of Ain Issa district, the second will be on the M4, while the third will be established in the western part of Ain Issa district, Kurdistan 24 said, citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor.

The Russian military has reportedly already established an observation point on the M4 and another northwest of Ain Issa to deter further Turkish escalation, Kurdistan 24 said.

An official from Ain Issa&rsquo;s civil administration said Russia had asked the SDF to evacuate the area in exchange for the Syrian army&rsquo;s deployment to prevent any further Turkish attacks and threats, according to Britain-based Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat.

Russia has repeatedly requested raising the Syrian flag, reopening state institutions and establishing a military post inside Ain Issa, the newspaper said.
