"The removal of the terrorist Abu Ibrahim al-Qurayshi from a region he did so much to harm is welcomed by our people and our Yazidi brothers and sisters in particular,” Barzani said.
US President Joe Biden said during a speech at the White House on Thursday Quraishi was the "driving force” behind the enslavement of Yezidi women and children when ISIS seized control of wide swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
Barzani also called on the US and the international coalition to continue its train and equip program for Kurdish forces and the Iraqi army.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi also issued a statement on Thursday welcoming "the elimination of Daesh’s [ISIS] leader.”
"Iraq’s Security Forces have played a pivotal role in killing and capturing Daesh terrorists inside Iraq and gathering intelligence that finally led to the head of this terrorist organization,” Kadhimi said.
The Spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Maj. Gen. Yehia Rasool, said the Iraqi National Intelligence Service gave the coalition information that led to Quraishi’s location.
Biden in his speech at the White House on Thursday praised "our brave partners in the Syrian Democratic Forces” for regaining control of the al-Sinaa prison in Hasaka after days of clashes when the facility housing thousands of Islamic State members came under attack from sleeper cells in the area.
"We’ll continue working with our close allies and partners — the Syrian Democratic Forces; the Iraqi Security Forces, including the Kurdish Peshmerga; and the more than 80 members of the global coalition — to keep pressure on ISIS,” Biden said.
