Bogdanov says Kurds participation in constitutional reform in Syria is essential

The participation of the Kurds representatives in the constitutional reform in Syria is necessary, said Mikhail Bogdanov Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, on Friday, February 18.

If we are talking about constitutional reform, we support the participation of representatives of the Kurdish people also in the process, and this will prevent any accusations of secession, Bogdanov said in an interview with RT TV channel.

“Therefore, we support that the Syrians, regardless of their sectarian or ethnic affiliations, find compromise solutions in their relations, based on the principles of preserving the unity and sovereignty of the Syrian territories,” Bogdanov added.

Bogdanov pointed out that some Kurdish formations, such as the Syrian Democratic Council, control very large areas east of the Euphrates, relying on the American presence, and this raises our concern because we always support the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria.

On February 16, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, stressed the possibility of holding a new round of Syrian Constitutional Committee talks next March.

After talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, Pedersen told the pro-government al-Watan newspaper “After my talks today, I can say that I am more optimistic that there will be a seventh round of talks to complete a draft constitution sometime next March.”
