Nechirvan Barzani meets US envoy, delegation

The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, met with a delegation led by US Ambassador to Iraq Matthew Tueller on Wednesday (March 9) to discuss the current political and security situation in Iraq.

The office of the Kurdistan Region Presidency said in a statement the delegation included the Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq and Iran, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Levant and Syria, the US Consul General in Erbil and other officials.
Barzani said a "political gridlock" existed in Iraq and so far, no understanding exists between the parties to get the process moving.
The statement from the presidency also indicated the talks included the latest developments in the political process, the security situation, in particular the potential danger of a resurgence of Islamic State (ISIS) group militants in Iraq and Syria.
The decision last month from the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court on the oil and gas law in the Kurdistan Region reforms in the Peshmerga Ministry and the internal situation in the KRG were also discussed.
"The US delegation reaffirmed its country’s commitment to developing relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and their cooperation with the Peshmerga and the Iraqi army to confront ISIS as necessary and important,” the statement announced.
Both Barzani and the delegation agreed on the importance of unity among Kurdish factions in the Iraqi Parliament, according to the statement.
