U.K. defense minister Williamson makes surprise visit to Baghdad

<p style="text-align: left;">British Defense Minister Gavin Williamson arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Thursday in a surprise visit, Iraqi media reports said.

The reports said Williamson was going to discuss bilateral cooperation, political and security situation in Iraqi with Iraqi officials.

Williamson was on a visit to Kuwait on Wednesday, the first since his appointment in November 2017.

British Prime Minister Theresa May paid a visit to Baghdad in November, when she discussed mutual relations and reconstruction assistance with Iraqi officials.

The U.K. had been a member of the United States-led coalition which backed Iraqi forces in their war against Islamic State militants since the group&rsquo;s emergence in 2014 and until the declaration of its defeat early December.
