KIG rebrands itself as the Kurdistan Justice Group

During the second day of its party congress on Friday, February 19, the Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG) renamed itself as the Kurdistan Justice Group and elected more than twenty members to the party’s Leadership Council.

The rebranding was designed to make the party appear more inclusive, but did not indicate a move away its focus on Islamic values, NRT reported.

The party also rebranded the name of its leader from "emir" to "president" during the congress's last day.

A total of 68 people ran for the twenty-two seats on the Leadership Council during the meeting, which was held at the Sulaimani International Expo Center in Tasluja

On Thursday, party leader Ali Bapir was re-elected.

The congress participants also discussed a proposed party strategy for the next several years.

The KIG was established in May 2001, after splitting from the Kurdistan Islamic Movement (KIM). It previously held party congresses in 2005, 2010, and 2015.

It was supposed to hold its Fourth Congress last year, but it was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
