Iranian FM Javad Zarif meets Nechirvan Barzani in Erbil

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met Mohammad Javad Zarif, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and his accompanying delegation on Tuesday, April 27.

The Iranian delegation included Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq, Iran’s Consul General in Erbil, Iran’s Consul General in Sulaymani, and a number of officials and advisors of Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
In the meeting, attended by the Vice-Presidents and a number of officials of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani referred to the long-standing relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic and Iran’s continuous support of the Kurdistan Region during difficult periods, the Kurdish presidency said in a statement after the meeting.
"The president stressed that the Kurdistan Region will remain a factor for regional security and stability and looks forward to neighborly relations with Iran based on mutual interests," the statement further said.
"Foreign Minister Zarif confirmed his country’s willingness to strengthen its long-established relations with the Kurdistan Region, and expressed concern over the missile attacks on Erbil, stressing that Iran seeks to establish regional security and peace, and that stability, vibrant commerce and trade are in the best interest of both sides," the statement added.
According to Kurdistan Region presidency website discussions also covered the developments in Iraq, the war on ISIS and the presence of the International Coalition in Iraq, the upcoming Iraqi elections, the Erbil-Baghdad agreement on the status of Shingal district and the expansion of commercial relations of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with Iran. Border trade and commercial exchange, Erbil-Baghdad relations and latest regional developments were also highlighted at the meeting.
