Kosrat Rasul halts PUK leadership council activities, annuls decisions

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) High Political Council Leader Kosrat Rasul on Tuesday, February 11, halted all activities of the PUK Leadership Council and called for responsible and rational decision making from the council due to the situation the PUK is going through.

The PUK High Political Council had an unusual meeting on the matter of the party’s Leadership Council decision and meeting this past month and they decided to halt all actives of the council due to the Situation PUK’s internal factions are going through.

“All the decisions you have made as of late puts the union of party at risk,” Rasul said in a letter addressed to the Leadership Council.

“There needs to be special meetings in the party to discuss the problems and different opinions within the party, after that we can decide if the Leadership Council’s activities should continue, the party’s situations needs to be closely observed and calculate all possibilities because the PUK is in a situation that we need to be careful about,” Rasul added.

The party adopted a new leadership structure on Saturday following a vote by the powerful General Leadership Committee, which has been voting on internal party by-laws.

Under the new system, the party would have at least two co-presidents sharing power. There will likely also be a deputy leader position alongside the presidents, though the nature of that position is still under discussion.

Among those rumored for the top leadership are Lahur Sheikh Jangi and Bafel Talabani, who are first cousins and received the two highest vote totals during the recent party congress in December. Current President of Iraq Barham Salih’s name has also been floated for a top position.
