Envoy says Iran is willing to cooperate with Iraq

The Iranian ambassador to Baghdad, Iraj Masjedi, stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran is supporting the new Iraqi government, which he described as a government that was formed on will of the Iraqi people.

In an interview with Iraq's state-run news network of al-Iraqiya al-Akhbaria on Saturday evening, Iran's ambassador to Baghdad, Iraj Masjedi, stressed that Tehran supports the Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi and his government, pointing out that al-Kadhimi’s government has been formed on the will of the people.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is eager to cooperate, help and support the government of Mustafa al-Kadhimi, because we believe that this government is based on the will of the Iraqi people and that the Parliament has voted for it,” Masjedi told the news network.

The Iranian ambassador to Baghdad added: “We are ready for all types of cooperation, and we are confident that bilateral relations between the two countries will develop, will be strengthened and will improve properly during al-Kadhimi’s term.”

“The important issue for us is the common interests of the two countries; I met with the prime minister and a significant number of cabinet ministers, and discussed bilateral relations and existing cases between Iran and Iraq,” the Iranian envoy further said.

Masjedi also noted that “it is true that the new Iraqi government is different from previous ones, but the requirements of the two countries' relationship will not change. There are no major differences in relations, and such a situation won’t occur. The new government's approach toward the Islamic Republic of Iran is positive, and we want to cooperate.”
