Kurdish farmer killed in Turkey army fire: local official

Turkish army fire killed an Iraqi Kurdish farmer on Friday in the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq, where Ankara has been battling militants, Agence France-Presse reported on Friday, citing a local official.

Director of Kani Mase sub-district Sarbast Sabri said Turkish warplanes bombed areas around the village of Disheshe in Kani Mase in Kurdistan Region, killing a 50-year-old civilian.

“A piece of rocket hit the civilian who is a resident of Zakho but visited the village to water his agricultural field,” Sabri told Esta Media Network.

Separately, clashes erupted between the Turkish military and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) near the village on Friday morning, he said.

The incident came a day after a Turkish soldier was killed in the same region by shellfire that Ankara blamed on militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Turkish forces frequently conduct operations against PKK rear bases in northern Iraq, the latest of which was launched in April.

The PKK’s armed campaign for a Kurdish homeland has often put it at odds with the Iraqi Kurdish regional government, which seeks to maintain good ties with Ankara.

Turkish troops have had a network of bases in northern Iraq since the mid-1990s.

Turkey has taken its decades-old conflict with the PKK deep into northern Iraq, establishing military bases and deploying armed military drones against the fighters in their mountain strongholds.
