the Kurdistan Regional Government and the central government of Iraq announced an agreement on October 9, 2019, on the normalization of the situation in Shingal and said they are attempting to improve the administrative and security situation in this Yazidi region.
The State Department issued a statement supporting the agreement between Erbil and Baghdad on improving the situation in Shingal and the return of Yazidi refugees to the region, and emphasizing the Yazidi interests should be preserved in the agreement.
"The United States welcomes the recent efforts of the Government of Iraq and the Government of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, in coordination with the United Nations Special Representative for Iraq, to address the long-term security and political challenges of Shingal," the State Department said in the statement.
The United States has expressed hope that the October 9 Agreement on Shingal will allow the rapid, safe and voluntary return of those displaced by the ISIS attack into the region.
The State Department has emphasized that the interests of the people of Shingal, especially those who have been victims of genocide, must be at the forefront of any efforts to restore security and peace in the region.
