While months have passed since the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections and the new government has not yet been formed, there are signs of deepening political differences and more complicated power equations in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. In this context, the recent statements of Hoshiar Sivaili, the head of the foreign relations office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which were previously published in the Rudaw media network, contain clear assessments of the current situation and future prospects.
With the passage of time since the Kurdistan parliamentary elections in October 2024, the government has not yet been formed. Sivaili said about this: "Our friends abroad clearly say that the government should be formed as soon as possible, but unfortunately, instead of seriously advancing this process, the Patriotic Union is creating an alliance with the new generation; Which not only doesn't help, but makes the process more complicated and longer."
In response to the question whether these two currents can prevent the formation of the government or form the government themselves, he stated: "It is difficult to form a government without the Democratic Party. Even the total seats of the Patriotic Union and New Generation (38 seats) are neither enough to form a government nor to play the role of an effective opposition; Because until the government is formed, there is no meaning in being an opposition."
The foreign relations officer of the Democratic Party emphasized that the party made a serious effort to form a government and even before the elections, they reached an agreement with the Patriotic Union on the governance perspective" and signed it, but the union did not adhere to it."
In the end, he warned about solving the political deadlock and said: "This situation cannot continue for a long time. You can't wait for a few years. If the situation remains as it is, re-holding elections will be one of the options for the political forces."
