Iraqi PM vows to respond decisively to ISIS Friday attack in Diyala

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Friday, January 21, promised "decisive” action in response to an Islamic State (ISIS) attack against the Iraqi army in Diyala that killed nearly a dozen people.

"Our forces will have a resounding response against the murderous terrorists,” Kadhimi said in a statement posted to Twitter.
The Iraqi PM also said the armed forces had "a duty to prevent the recurrence of these violations.”
Eleven people, including police officers, were killed in the attack in al-Azim sub-district in Diyala on Friday and ten others were wounded, a police spokesperson told NRT.
Diyala Operations Command said earlier on Friday a lieutenant was among the 11 killed in the attack, according to Iraqi state media.
President Barham Salih also responded in a statement on Twitter, saying "The attempts to revive terrorism in the region cannot be underestimated.”
The United Nations Mission in Iraqi (UNAMI) said the Diyala crime served as a warning that ISIS militants remain a danger.
"The terrorist attack in Diyala, which took the lives of Iraqi troops and injured others, is a painful reminder that Dae’sh (ISIL) remains a threat,” UNAMI said in a statement.
Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi also responded to the attack, saying, "The escalation of terrorist operations targeting our military and security forces requires a strong response.”
A security delegation led by the Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah went to the scene of the attack in al-Adhim on Friday, Iraqi News Agency reported.
