On May 3, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan disclosed about a project of establishing settlements in the Turkish-run areas in Syria to deport about one million Syrian refugees.

The Turkish project to deport Syrian refugees and to Syrian areas to where they do not belong is the biggest conspiracy towards the demographic change in the region, Anas al-Marfou’, member of the Deir ez-Zor Affairs of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), said on Monday.

“Building Turkish settlements along the border strip on the Syrian territory is a remarkable Turkish tool to maintain its control and dominance over the Syrian people in their homeland,” al-Marfou’ added.

This issue is similar to annexing Sanjak of Alexandretta by Turkey in 1939 which “forms a human barrier that supports Turkey, protects its borders and implements its agendas inside Syria,” he noted, North Press reported.

The SDC official condemned Erdogan’s remarks in which he stresses that he is going ahead constructing settlements in areas he runs in Syria and deporting the Syrian refugees in Turkey to the targeted areas.

The Turkish practice “violates international conventions,” he said.

The persistent international silence over crimes committed by the Turkish forces and the Syrian opposition factions “urges Turkey to deny the international law and go ahead committing more crimes,” according to al-Marfou’.

“This will cause extra burdens for residents of the Turkish-occupied areas in Afrin, al-Bab, Ras al-Ain, Jarablus and Tel Abyad,” he elaborated.
