The statement added that the meeting ahead of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government elections is a good opportunity to discuss various issues, including the need to distance from conflicting policies and to strive for transparent and credible elections.
The statement stressed that securing the interests of the citizens of the Iraqi Kurdish region was the main topic of the meeting. In the statement, UN Representative Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert praised the parties and figures participating in the meeting and stressed the need to continue efforts to meet the challenges facing the Iraqi Kurdish region.
Salahaddin Babaker, the representative of the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) said the meeting covered three main topics: the political state of the Kurdistan Region, the Region’s elections and relations between the Region’s provinces.
Babaker noted Thursday’s meeting did not manage to cover all three topics because of the lack of sufficient time.
The system of public employees’ salaries, including the "salary saving system” and delays to wages, was discussed during the meeting as well, according to the KIU representative.
The United Nations said it should monitor the process of amending the election law.
The UN and the political parties will come to a final decision regarding the Region’s elections in two weeks.
