Iraq postpones parliamentary elections

Iraq’s early parliamentary elections were delayed until October 10, the country's Council of Ministers voted unanimously on Tuesday, January 19.

The elections was due to to be held for June 6, but the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) advised Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Sunday that the polls should be moved back to allow for additional time for voters, electoral alliances, and candidates to complete registration procedures, NRT reported.
Earlier on Tuesday, Kadhimi also extended the deadline for electoral alliances to register by two months.
The prime minister promised to hold early elections when he took office last spring, meeting one of the major demands of the protesters who took to the streets in October 2019 calling for root-and-branch changes in the country's governance.
