PUK has set precondition for PUK participation in new government: official

Member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) politburo Qadr Aziz said on Wednesday, December 26, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has preconditions on PUK’s participation in the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet.

Qadr Aziz told NRT during Tawtwe Program that the KDP has incorporated both issues of the new Kurdistan Regional Government’s cabinet and the issue of Kurdistan Region’s presidency into one package, as well as it has stipulated that the PUK should accept the latest issue as well. Meanwhile, the issue of the Region’s presidency was not included before.
“Both PUK’s and KDP’s views on the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government’s cabinet are different, despite allegations on a political agreements, but the type of the agreements are yet unclear,” Aziz was quoted as saying.
Azizi insisted that the PUK will not be an opposition in the coming cabinet and the decision about the Kurdistan Region’s presidency by the KDP to be elected in the parliament does not have any value to us, because the KDP is the majority there, thus the position should be elected by people.
On December 3, the KDP nominated Nechirvan Barzani as its candidate for president of the Kurdistan Region and Masrour Barzani as its candidate for Prime Minister.
Both Gorran and PUK welcomed the nominations, while the New Generation Movement expressed its opposition to the KDP holding both the presidency and the premiership.
