Checkpoints between Kirkuk, Kurdistan Region removed

<p style="text-align:left">Customs checkpoints between Kirkuk and the Kurdistan Region were removed on Saturday. February 16, according to NRT.

The removal of the checkpoints came less than five months after being put in place.
The traders can now freely export goods from the Kurdistan Region to Kirkuk province, the report said.
The removal of the customs checkpoints is part of an agreement between Erbil and Baghdad in order to reorganize customs procedures.
On September 22, 2018, the Iraqi government erected two customs checkpoints on the roads from Sulaimani and Erbil to the city in order to collect taxes on on goods from the Kurdistan Region. The levies were between five and ten percent of the value of the cargo, which caused a spike in the price of goods being sold in Kirkuk.
The Kurdistan Region&rsquo;s Directorate of Customs and the Iraqi Customs Board reached a 27-point agreement to eliminate the checkpoints on November 11, nearly two months after they were put in place, but it had not been implemented until today.
