Turkish ministry says Iran, Turkey commanders agree to continue anti-PKK operation

<p style="text-align: left;">Turkish and Iranian military commanders agreed in a phone call to continue joint operations against militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for "some time", Turkey's Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

Turkey's Interior Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that Turkish Gendarme Commander Arif Cetin and Iranian Border Forces Commander Qassem Rezai discussed the joint operations.

Iran earlier this week denied a Turkish announcement that the two countries were carrying out a joint operation against the PKK.

In a separate phone call Turkish and Iranian deputy interior ministers welcomed the stage reached in the joint operations, the ministry said.

Earlier this week Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey and Iran were carrying out a joint operation against the PKK, describing it as the first of its kind, but an Iranian source said Iran's armed forces were not part of the operation.

Meanwhile the Spokesman of the Iranian Armed Forces, Birgadier Abdulfazl Shekarchi, stated late on Wednesday that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran is not participating in Turkey military operation against the Kurdistan Workers&rsquo; Party (PKK) on the borders of the two country.

The Iranian official refuted the participation of any Iranian forces in such an operation after Erdogan and Turkish Interior Minister Sulaiman Soilu stated that Ankara and Tehran have started a joint military operation against the PKK.

Despite claims about the start of such an operation two days ago in Turkey eastern border, no local and media reports have been released about any operation against the PKK.
