Real Madrid to open football academies in Iraq

<p style="text-align:left">A delegation from the Real Madrid football club has visited Iraq to discuss plans to establish football academies in several provinces around the country.

Representatives from the Spanish powerhouse met with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi in Baghdad on Thursday, March 21, the premier&rsquo;s office said in a statement.

Abdul Mahdi hoped that the &ldquo;visit will contribute to an increase in cooperation and development in this vital sector,&rdquo; according to the statement.

The Spanish Embassy in Iraq posted photos on Twitter showing Carlos Escudero, president of the Real Madrid Foundation, giving Abdul Mahdi a club jersey with his name emblazoned on the back.

&ldquo;Real Madrid will open football academies in Iraq,&rdquo; the Embassy tweeted.

&ldquo;This visit is another example of Spanish support for stability and development in Iraq.&rdquo;

The world footballing calendar is currently in an international break, with friendlies taking place over the next several days.

The Iraqi men's national team has had a successful run over the last year, only losing two fixtures since May.
