The goal of his visit was to promote his re-election campaign ahead of the Iraqi parliamentary elections set for May 12, NRT reported.
He held a brief meeting with Barzani at the Erbil International Airport then headed to Saad Abdullah hall to rally voters in favor of his alliance as part of the election campaign.
The visit by the Iraqi Prime Minister to the Kurdistan Region was first of its kind after the October 16 incidents in the aftermath of an independence referendum last year, which led to deterioration of Erbil-Baghdad relations.
Relations between Erbil and Baghdad hit their lowest point in the aftermath of the referendum held by the Kurdistan Region, which saw 92.7 percent of voters say “yes” to independence.
The Iraqi government took harsh security and economic measures against the region, including a ban on international flights to and from the Kurdistan Region’s airports.
