The deployment is reportedly part ''of an expanding series of military and diplomatic steps the United States has taken in recent weeks to defuse escalating tensions with Turkey over American support for Syrian Kurdish fighters'' with the YPG, which Turkey considers a branch of the outlawed PKK.
The PKK is officially listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the US and the EU but the YPG was the US's ally in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.
CNN reported that one of the aims is to create a buffer zone along the border between Syria and Turkey but that no final decision had yet been made. About 1,000 US soldiers are currently involved in anti-IS operations in Syria.
Russian and Syrian government airstrikes meanwhile continue on the northwestern region of Idlib, which is out of government control and in which various armed opposition groups and Turkish soldiers are present. Reports were from sources on the ground and local media, which said that the airstrikes are the most violent since another ceasefire was brought in on Saturday.
