US envoy reiterates Washington’s support for Kurdistan Region

<p style="text-align:left">US Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat Islamic State (IS) James Jeffrey reiterated US support for the Kurdistan Region and the Peshmerga forces during meetings with senior figures in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday, December 7.

During their meeting, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Jeffery discussed the latest developments in Iraq, Syria, and the Middle East.

According to the KRG readout, the US envoy emphasized &ldquo;the US' commitment to supporting the Kurdistan Region and the Peshmerga forces.&rdquo;

The KRG prime minister, for his part, thanked the United States for its continued support for the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani said that Islamic State (IS) is &ldquo;still a great threat to the security in Iraq,&rdquo;adding that cooperation with the international community is necessary to counter the threats posed by the militant group.

The US envoy, who is also the Trump administration's Syria envoy, arrived in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday morning.

According to NRT James is expected to discuss recent attacks by IS militants in the Garmian administration, according to the reporter.

IS militants attacked the Peshmerga&rsquo;s Third Brigade in Kulajo town on Wednesday night. Three members of the Peshmerga were killed and two others were wounded.

Following the attack, the Ministry of Peshmerga called on the Coalition forces fighting IS militants to increase their support and assistance to the Peshmerga.

The village was the site of a deadly attack last week in which three Asayish were killed, including a commander.
