Iraqi leaders call for new government formation

<p style="text-align: left;">Iraqi President Barham Salih, caretaker Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi, and Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi stressed the importance of expediting the formation of a new government during a meeting on Wednesday night, January 15.

The three leaders said that it was important to accelerate the formation of a new government that responds to &ldquo;demands for reform in the political and economic arenas, as well as services,&rdquo; according to a statement issued by Salih's office.

According to NRT they also emphasized the need to take into account concerns about Iraq&rsquo;s sovereignty and its protection from external interference.

Iraq has been rocked by anti-government protests for over three months. Initially the demonstrators wanted the government o to do more to fight corruption, increase job opportunities, and improve public services, but they are now calling for the resignation of the government and early elections.

More than 500 people have been killed and over 17,000 others have been wounded since anti-government protests began on October 1, according to the High Commission for Human Rights. Local and international rights watchdogs have condemned the killings.
