Russia intends to expand its military presence in the Hasaka region, which is controlled by the Kurdish autonomous region of northern and eastern Syria, and to this end it has formed a military unit composed of indigenous elements.

Anadolu quoted local sources as saying that Russia has been trying for some time to expand its military presence in Hasaka, which is a scene of tension between Syrian government forces and Kurdish-Arab forces.

The report added that the Russian army had stationed about 1,000 troops in Hasaka since December 25, 2020, and is now forming a local military unit in areas under Damascus control.

Russia continues to register the recruitment of indigenous forces in Hasaka, and it is said that 200 people have registered so far. Those who join the unit will be paid $ 300 a month.

It should be noted that Hasaka has been one of the points of tension between the Kurdish administration and Damascus in recent months. Last month, central government forces, stationed in parts of the city, as well as in the city of Qamishli, were besieged and sanctioned by the self-ruling administration's internal security forces. This action was taken by the central government in response to the boycott of Kurdish citizens in the Kurdish refugee camp of Shahba and the residents of the Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo. Eventually, the tension was resolved through Russian mediation.
