His office confirmed that he was treated at Shar Hospital. He was released later on Friday evening to recuperate at home.
He reportedly suffered facial wounds, NRT reported.
Muhammed is a member of the Change Movement (Gorran).
Gorran released a statement saying that it views the attack as directed against the party and an attempt to restrict the freedoms in the Kurdistan Region.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Spokesperson Jotiar Adil said that the government “strongly condemns the attack” and that the security forces have been directed to “find the perpetrators and bring them to justice as soon as possible.”
KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani condemned the attack in a tweet and urged the security forces to launch an investigation into the incident.
“Such cowardly act is not accepted by anyone,” Talabani assured Muhammed in a phone call.
