Following the failure of Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi for form a government, Iraqi President Barham Salih tapped al-Zurfi on March 17, giving him 30 days to complete the task.

However, significant elements within the parliament are opposed to al-Zurfi’s nomination, as is Iran, meaning that he faces an uphill battle to win approval in the Council of Representatives.
