Nechirvan Barzani, US Deputy Assistant Secretary meet in Erbil

<p style="text-align:left">Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iraq Affairs in the U.S. Department of State&amp;rsquo;s Near Eastern Affairs bureau, David Copley, in Erbil on Tuesday.

At the meeting, both sides discussed the latest political and security developments in Iraq, the ongoing talks between Erbil and Baghdad to settle their disagreements, the Iraq-U.S. strategic dialogue and bilateral relations. Discussions also covered the threats on diplomatic missions in Baghdad, activities of the international coalition forces to defeat ISIS, the upcoming early elections in Iraq, terror threats, and confronting the movements of the ISIS terrorists in the country.
Both sides emphasized on strengthening ties between the United States and Iraq, especially in the economic fields, as well as creating business and investment opportunities for U.S. private sector companies in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and ways to expand bilateral relations in all fields of cooperation.
The two sides agreed that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region need assistance and support from the international coalition in the war against ISIS and stressed the importance of continued cooperation and coordination between the Kurdistan Peshmerga and Iraqi forces to defeat and eliminate ISIS.
In the meeting, which was also attended by the U.S. Consul General in Erbil, developments in the wider region, implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues of mutual interest were discussed.
