Customs checkpoints open between Kirkuk, Erbil and Sulaimani

<p style="text-align: left;">Iraqi and Kurdish officials opened customs checkpoints on the Erbil-Kirkuk and Sulaimani-Kirkuk roads on Saturday, September 22.

The event to inaugurate the checkpoints was attended by Kurdish officials and an envoy of the Iraqi Prime Minister, NRT reported.

The installations are part of an agreement struck between Iraqi and Kurdish officials to open the main road between Erbil and Kirkuk on August 19.

The agreement was finalized once officials in the two provinces agreed to certain security arrangements.

According to NRT there will be a five percent customs duty on imports and exports that originated in Iran or Turkey. One percent will be allocated to Kirkuk province and four percent to the central government.

The road between Erbil and Kirkuk was closed over 300 days ago in the aftermath of the independence referendum and a subsequent military operation by Iraqi armed forces and paramilitary troops that retook much of the territory claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad.
