Iraqi parliament suspends session to elect new president

The Iraqi Parliament on Monday, October 1, suspended the session to elect the new president because it did not achieve quorum.

The session was suspended after 30 minutes when it was clear that too few MPs were present, NRT reported.

Only 159 parliamentarians attended the session, missing the necessary threshold by 62.

A Kurdish delegation led by deputy head of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Nechirvan Barzani, is in meeting with Iraqi political parties to discuss KDP’s candidate for presidency.

“KDP faction asked the Iraqi blocs to not attend the parliament session” until meeting between Iraqi parties and Barzani will come to an end.

Ahead of Monday’s session, KDP met with PUK in an attempt to come to an agreement regarding the Iraqi presidency.

The PUK on Sunday, September 30, also appealed to members of the Iraqi parliament and asked them to vote for Barham Salih, the party’s candidate for the Iraqi presidency.
