Iraqi Parliament to hold session on fatal Turkish attack

More than 100 members of the Iraqi Parliament have called for an urgent session to discuss the recent Turkish attack in Zakho district of Duhok province, in which more than nine civilians were killed and scores injured.

The semi-official Iraqi News Agency (INA) cited the head of New Generation group in Baghdad, Srwa Abdulwahid, as saying the session would be held on Saturday, July 23, to debate the "repeated Turkish assaults" in Iraq.
Independent MP Hadi Salami said the members are calling on the government to take "necessary measures," the report said.
Another report by INA said that several MPs are calling for drafting new legislation to "regulate Iraqi-Turkish relations."
Other MPs have called for expelling the Turkish ambassador in Baghdad, and recalling the Iraqi counterpart from Ankara as well as cutting trade ties with Turkey, it added.
The fatal attack, for which Turkey denies responsibility, has led to strong condemnations from local and international officials.
The United States, the United Kingdom, the Arab League, and Iran have condemned the attack.
Turkey is engaged in a multi-decade long conflict with the Kurdish rebel group Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Turkey regularly targets PKK bases in the Kurdistan Region and other parts of northern Iraq.
