A statement from the court announced a lawyer, Ziadin Rahmala, filed the appeal against the decision by Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi to sign the letters of resignation filed by MPs from the Sadrist Movement.
Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of the movement, instructed MPs from the bloc to hand in resignation letters to the parliament's presidency on June 12. The former head of the Sadrist Movement's bloc in parliament, Hassan al-Azari, presented all 73 letters of resignation to Halbousi, who accepted them.
The Sadrist Movement was considered the largest bloc by number of seats in parliament before the mass resignation of its MPs. The move came after the Iraqi parliament failed to form a government and was unable to elect a president of the republic following elections held in October 2021.
