Iran expresses concern over Turkey’s operation in Afrin

<p style="text-align: left;">Iran emphasizes maintaining territorial integrity of Syria and respecting the national sovereignty of the country, Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

&ldquo;Islamic Republic of Iran is following the recent developments in Afrin, northern Syria with concern,&rdquo; Bahram Qasemi said Sunday while expressing the hope for stopping the operation immediately to prevent developing tensions along Turkey-Syria borders.

Continuation of crisis will result in reinforcing Takfiri-terrorist groups in northern Syria and fan the flames of war in the country, he said.

According to IRNA Qasemi further urged all countries, especially Turkey as a peace guarantor in Syria, to stay committed to political settlement procedure (Astana talks).

The Iranian official also called for Turkey to perform its productive and important role in resolving the crisis in Syria.

&ldquo; We believe that Syrian crisis is deeply rooted in irresponsible behavior and the provocative measures taken by trans-regional countries such as US and also by some overambitious countries in the region and warmongers,&rdquo; Qasemi said.

The humanitarian crisis will be underway in Syria, if the US and its allies continue their illegitimate presence in the country. All responsible countries especially neighboring ones are expected to avoid any move reinforcing the presence of trans-regional interventionist forces and encouraging the terrorist groups as well, he noted.
