Kurdistan Region-Iran ordinary border points to be officially recognized

<p style="text-align: left;">The head of Kurdistan -Tehran ties at the Department of Foreign Relations, Abdullah Akrayee said on Sunday, February 18, that there is a decision to officially recognize ordinary border points between Iran and the Kurdish region.

Akrayee didn&rsquo;t give a specific date, but said the decision has received support of Tehran and the Iraqi government, NRT reported.

The decision comes as part of attempts by Iran and the Kurdistan Region to promote their bilateral relations, said Akrayee.

It is also after a recent visit by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani to Tehran, where he met with President Hassan Rouhani.

A KRG delegation headed by Erbil Governor Nawzad Hadi is set to visit Tehran in the next few days to boost trade activities at the border crossings, added Akrayee.

Iran closed the border crossings, at the demand of Baghdad, after the Kurdistan Region voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence; a referendum that Baghdad insisted was illegal.
