Erbil hands over hundreds of IS militants to Baghdad

<p style="text-align:left">The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has handed over hundreds of Islamic State (IS) militants arrested by the Kurdish forces to the Iraqi government in several stages, an official said on Monday, March 12.

The head of the KRG Committee to Evaluate and Respond to International Reports, Dindar Zebari said 277 IS militants were handed over to Nineveh investigative court following a decision by the Asayish (security) investigative court in Erbil, NRT reported.
Separately, another 576 militants were handed over to Rasafa court in Baghdad in five stages, he said in a statement.
The KRG official further said Kurdish security forces had arrested 2,652 people suspected to have links to Islamic State between 2014 and 2016.
Up to 1,100 detainees confessed links to the militant group while 870 others were released for having no relations to IS, he noted. 682 others are still under investigation.
Zebari said 709 IS members and suspects were also detained in the last six months of 2017, 279 of which were released.
IS militants swept across northern and western Iraq in 2014. Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led coalition air power wrested back northern and western territory overran by the militants.
