Turkish police detain HDP politicians protesting against dismissed mayors

<p style="text-align:left">Turkish police on Thursday injured lawmakers from the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) during a harsh intervention on a protest against the suspension of HDP mayors, pro-Kurdish Mezopotamya news agency reported.

The police broke an HDP executive's nose and battered lawmakers while intervening on the protest in the western city of Izmir, Mezopotamya said.

Later on Thursday, seven people including the local HDP mayor were detained in a separate protest in the town of Lice in Turkey's southeastern Diyarbakır province, pro-government newspaper Sabah reported.

The mayors of Diyarbakir, Mardin and Van provinces were dismissed on August 19 and replaced with government-appointed officials just months after being elected to office in March.

The government says the mayors are linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), an armed group that has fought the Turkish state for over three decades.

The HDP launched "Democracy Watch" demonstration in Izmir, and planned to make a statement to the press, however, the demonstrators were not allowed, according to Mezopotamya.

The police used batons to disperse the group, detaining numerous people present including journalists, and injured HDP lawmakers including the party's Izmir executive, the news agency said.

Earlier, the demonstrations in Mardin, Van, Diyarbakir and Istanbul also faced interventions from the police, who used tear gas on protestors and detained dozens.
