Demirtas casts his vote from prison

<p style="text-align: left;">Turkey imprisoned pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtas has cast his ballot on Sunday, June 24, from prison during Turkey&amp;rsquo;s snap presidential and parliamentary elections.

&ldquo;We cast our ballot from prison. I would like everyone to use the option for democracy for sake of the future of the country,&rdquo; Demirtas said in a post on his official Twitter account.

Turkish voters headed to polls on Sunday, June 24, in a snap vote to elect the president and parliament members.

Demirtas who was forced to run his campaign from prison, said &ldquo;I hope that the voting process will be completed in a calm and peaceful environment. I believe the results will be very good.&rdquo;

There are more than 56 million voters who are eligible to cast votes in more than 180,000 ballot boxes across Turkey.

In the parliamentary election, 4,800 candidates are competing for 600 parliament seats – 977 of whom are women.

More than 1 million voters abroad cast ballots out of 3,047,328 potential voters in between June 7 to June 19; the voter turnout was 48 percent.
