Hashd al-Shaabi warns Turkey against intervention in Shingal

Commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) in Shingal, Mahmud Araji, said on Wednesday that his forces are ready for any attack on the district by the Turkish military, arguing that Ankara wants to launch an attack using the presence of groups linked with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as a pretext.

Araji added that the Iraqi Security Forces should prevent foreign interference on Iraqi soil.

On January 22, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raised the prospect of intervention, saying in a speech that Turkish forces may “come there overnight, all of a sudden.”

Araji noted that Turkish violations of Iraqi sovereignty were not new and happen routinely.

Turkey regularly carries out cross-border operations in northern Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, justifying its actions as necessary to combat the PKK, which has waged a decades-long insurgency for Kurdish rights in Turkey’s southeast.

Last month, Turkey launched Operation Claw-Eagle 2, which focused fighting the PKK on Gara Mountain in Duhok governorate.
