“These turbulent times that our dear country it going through demand all of us to avoid conflict and urges us to agree on a mechanism to form a new federal government in accordance with the constitution and with unity as its foundation, which can stabilize the government and give it the ability to perform its duties,” Barzani said in a statement released on his office’s website.
“The most important thing at this time is to face the dangers and crises that Iraq is in,” he added.
Barzani said that the Kurdistan Region’s presidency believes that to find security and political stability, the new government should have the support of all factions.
“For that purpose, I support the nomination by the Shia factions of Mr. Mustafa al-Kadhimi for prime minister of the federal government. We ask all sides and factions to support him as well, so that he may complete the formation of the new government,” Barzani said.
Following the collapse of Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi’s bid to form a government, Iraqi President Salih charged Adnan al-Zurfi with forming a cabinet on March 17, giving him 30 days to do so.
However, his bid has run into opposition.
On Sunday, several prominent Shi’ite factions nominated al-Kadhimi, who has been the head of Iraq’s intelligence services since 2016.
