Fuad Hussein visits Berlin, meets German counterpart

<p style="text-align:left">German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas met with his visiting Iraqi Kurdish counterpart Fuad Hussein in Berlin on Monday, September 14, to discuss bilateral relations and the on-going campaign against Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

According to a readout published by Iraq&rsquo;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the pair discussed Baghdad&rsquo;s &ldquo;efforts to preserve Iraq&rsquo;s sovereignty, achieve political stability, and economic development,&rdquo; along with the outcomes of the US-Iraq Strategic Dialogue.
According to NRT Hussein said that the relationship between Iraq and Germany was &ldquo;important&rdquo; and thanked Germany for its efforts in helping to confront the threat posed by ISIS.
He also &ldquo;affirmed the Iraqi government&rsquo;s commitment to holding [early parliamentary] elections on time, in accordance with standards of integrity, transparency and international [observance],&rdquo; the readout said.
Maas said that Germany stood by Iraq in confronting its many challenges and said that Berlin has provided &euro;2 billion ($2.38 billion) as a part of that effort.
Maas also expressed appreciation for the effort of the Iraqi security forces in securing the release of Hella Mewis, a German arts advocate who was abducted in Baghdad in July.
