The Japanese FM Toshimitsu Motegi will meet and hold talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday morning in the Iranian Foreign Ministry building.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh had announced that Motegi would pay a two-day visit to Iran at the invitation of Mohammad Javad Zarif.
Iran-Japan relations have always been important as two important powers in West and East Asia, and the two countries have enjoyed friendly relations based on common interests during the 90 years of diplomatic relations, and now consultations on bilateral and multilateral issues are at the highest levels between the two countries, he added.
In addition to his Iranian counterpart, the Japanese Foreign Minister will meet with other senior officials of the country, Khatibzadeh noted.
Meanwhile, the Japanese foreign minister in his interview with the Saudi newspaper, Asharq Al-Awsat stated that Japan can openly exchange views with Iran by taking advantage of its long-standing friendship with the country.
Also Japan Times said that according to “diplomatic sources”, Motegi is expected to hold talks with Iranin President Ebrahim Raisi on the same day.
He is also planning to meet with Hossein Amir Abdollahian, a former Iranian deputy foreign minister who is set to succeed Zarif under the Raisi administration, the newspaper added.
In a note to IRNA, Motegi said that the relations between Tehran and Tokyo are friendly, old, and unchangeable.
Also, Iranian Embassy in Japan wrote in a Twitter message that the trip can open a new chapter for strengthening and expanding relations between Tehran and Tokyo.
Earlier, NKK television channel had said that Motegi was expected to urge Iranian officials to have a constructive role in deescalating tensions and creating stability in the Middle East.
He is also expected to announce Japan’s tendency to strengthen its traditional friendship with Iran.
Motegi and Iranian officials will probably discuss the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as well.
The Japanese Foreign Minister has already visited Turkey and arrived in Iraq on Saturday and intends to visit some other regional countries, including Qatar and Egypt.
