According to Kurdpress, at the same time as the International Mother Language Day, Kurdish and civic organizations in Istanbul called for a march with the slogan "We are marching for our mother tongue". The organizers of this gathering announced that the main goal is to demand an official status for languages and especially the right to education in the mother tongue; A right that, according to them, has been neglected for years.
According to Mesopotamia, the Kurdish Studies Association together with the Mesopotamian Cultural Center (Mesopotamia/MKM), the Freedom Lawyers Association (ÖHD), the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK) and the Agid Djimo Music Group of Mesopotamia announced that they will hold a march in Istanbul on the occasion of February 21, International Mother Language Day. This march is supposed to start on February 22 in front of the cow statue in Kadikoy and continue to Kadikoy pier.
Ramzieh Alp Arslan, co-chairman of the Kurdish Studies Association, emphasized the goals of this movement and said: "Our main goal is to defend the mother tongue and its official recognition." He added: "There is not just one mother tongue in this country. All these languages should have equal rights as soon as possible. But currently, only the Turkish language has an official position and other languages are ignored. This means ignoring the people who speak these languages.
Alp Arslan stated: "We will be there to defend our identity, culture, language and existence. Everyone should come and say: 'We are here, we have our language and we have our rights.' Just as the Turkish language has rights, our mother tongue should have the same rights." He emphasized that "the right to education in the mother tongue and to have an official position for the Kurdish language are our fundamental rights and we should not stop pursuing it.
Hanu Ronak, another co-chairman of the association, also announced: "Our wish is that our children can study in their mother tongue. For this reason, we demand the right of official status for the mother tongue." He invited all classes and civil organizations and said: "For the right to mother tongue and education, we ask all people and civil organizations to participate in this march.
This call is published while the issue of teaching in the mother tongue and the recognition of the Kurdish language is still one of the main demands of a significant part of the Kurdish community in Turkey; A demand that now echoes once again in the streets of Istanbul.
