The Kurds are waiting for practical action; Start with prisons and municipalities

Turkish Service - The co-chairman of the Dem Party called for practical steps to be taken in the "peace and democratic society" process at the Bitlis People's Meeting and emphasized that it should start with the release of prisoners and ending the appointment of guardians over municipalities.

According to Kurdpress, Tunjar Bekerkhan, the co-chairman of the Democratic Party, said at the popular meeting of this party in Bitlis, centered on the process of "peace and democratic society", that Kurds are now waiting for concrete and legal measures after a century of struggle for their identity, language and culture. Referring to the report of the parliamentary commission, he emphasized the necessity of legal reforms, legal guarantee of the Kurdish language, and changing the definition of citizenship in the constitution, and demanded an end to the security approach to the Kurdish issue.

Bakr Khan stated that the current process should be strengthened and said that the Kurdish issue is not only a security issue, but also related to democracy, freedoms and language rights. He emphasized that some currents still evaluate this issue in the context of "terrorism", while according to him, its solution requires a political and democratic approach. He also pointed to the words of Abdullah Ocalan and stated that without the participation of the Kurds, the realization of a democratic republic is not possible.

The co-chairman of the Democratic Party said about the report of the parliamentary committee that this report is "not the final solution, but a starting point" and if it has shortcomings, it should be resolved in the parliament. He emphasized the immediate implementation of the decisions of the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights and said that mother tongue is a "natural right". Bakrkhan added: "Education in the mother tongue does not divide the country; "Language is the factor of solidarity, not separation."

He also found it necessary to change the definition of citizenship and said that all citizens of Türkiye are equal, but this country consists of various ethnic groups and the constitution should reflect this fact. According to him, in order to advance the peace process, local democracy must be strengthened and the Ministry of Interior is also responsible in this regard.

In the end, Bekerkhan said, referring to the lack of legal guarantees in some areas: "On the one hand, it is said that weapons should be abandoned, but there is no legal framework for this process." He emphasized that the Kurds are waiting for practical measures and added: "Let's start with prisons and ending the guardianship of municipalities." He stated that the struggle for the recognition of the Kurdish identity and language will continue.
