According to Kurdpress, Mazloum Abdi (Kobani), the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the main politico-military figure of the Kurds in the northeast of the country, in an interview with the American PBS channel, described the late January agreement with the Damascus government as "the best possible option in the current situation", although he emphasized that this agreement was not necessarily the best scenario for the Kurds at the present time.
Referring to the agreement made between him and the President of Syria, Ahmad al-Shora, he said that the main purpose of accepting this agreement was to guarantee a ceasefire, establish stability and resolve differences through dialogue. According to Abdi, in the current situation, the Kurds are looking for the creation of a local administration that can manage the Kurdish areas and preserve the Kurdish identity.
Abdi clarified that the main demand of the Kurds is "autonomy", but added that considering the existing political and military balances, the Damascus government has only agreed to the formation of a "local administration" structure. At the same time, he warned that if this agreement collapses, the Kurdish forces will continue to fight "until the last moment" and it is "absolutely impossible" for them to hand over the Kurdish areas.
Referring to the threats of ISIS, the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces said that this group is still powerful and has gradually infiltrated some major cities in Syria. He emphasized that if the fight against ISIS does not continue vigorously, this organization will once again become a serious threat to Syria and the world.
Abdi considered the transfer of 5,700 ISIS prisoners from Syria to Iraq by the United States as an effective measure in weakening this group and said that these people will no longer be able to participate in ISIS attacks. However, he expressed concern about the situation of al-Hol camp and reminded that after handing over the control of this camp to the Syrian government, thousands of women and children affiliated with ISIS have left it and their fate is unknown.
He also described the possible withdrawal of American forces from Syria as an "inappropriate decision" at this point and warned that this action will create serious challenges, especially in the fight against terrorism. Referring to the recent attacks of the Syrian government forces on Kurdish positions, Abdi said that the United States did not take a decisive position to prevent these attacks, and this has caused "widespread disappointment" among the Kurds.
In the end, the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces said about his identity that he is both Syrian and Kurdish and he is proud of both identities. He emphasized that the Kurds want the reconstruction of Syria, but at the same time they want the Kurdish regions to develop and the Kurds to play an important and influential role in the country's future.
