According to Kurdpress, citing Rizen magazine, for the first time in the past decade, the United States has evacuated all its military bases in Syria and ended its field presence in the Kurdish areas of this country. The Syrian Foreign Ministry and the Central Command of the US Army (CENTCOM) announced that the last US base was handed over to the Syrian Army on Thursday.
In this way, the mission that started in 2015 with the aim of supporting the Syrian Kurdish forces in the fight against the ISIS group has officially ended. In the past years, America had a military presence mainly in the north and northeast of Syria and in the areas controlled by the Kurdish forces.
Reports indicate that Washington may continue its security cooperation and military consultation with the Syrian government without establishing a permanent base, but it will no longer have a fixed combat force on Syrian soil.
America's presence in Syria has been a point of contention within different American governments many times in recent years. During the first term of his presidency, Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of troops several times, but these decisions were not fully implemented.
The political developments in Syria after the fall of the previous regime and the inauguration of the new government in 2024 provided the basis for a review of the presence of the United States. However, insecurity on the ground, tension between the central government and Kurdish forces, and the increased threat of drone and missile attacks against US positions hastened the withdrawal process.
In January 2026, after the conflict between the Kurdish forces and the Syrian army, the United States transferred some of the ISIS-affiliated prisoners from northern Syria to Iraq. Analysts evaluated this action as a sign of the practical end of Washington's alliance with Syrian Kurdish forces.
Experts say that the complete withdrawal of America from Syria has been done in a situation where the new government of Damascus has relatively positive relations with Washington and the level of violence has also decreased compared to the years of the civil war.
With this development, the direct US military presence in the Kurdish regions of Syria, which lasted for nearly ten years, officially ended.
